Numbered prints : what, how, why ?

What's a numbered print ?

A numbered print, or a limited edition print, is the copy of an original work of art.

Only a limited number of prints, decided by the artist, will be made.

This gives each piece a certain rarity.

The numbering on the back says how many copies will be made in total and where the print stands in the series. It's that number that gives the piece its uniqueness.

How are my prints made ?

The prints you can find on my website are made with the help of a professional photographer based in Nîmes with whom I've been working since the very beginning.

From my original paintings, digitalized on site, each selected portrait is reviewed and adjusted on computer thanks to the sharp eye of the professional before they are printed. We chose high quality fine art paper to insure a final product as close as possible to the originals.

I then decide on the number of copies that will be made in total for each portrait then stamp and number the new prints.

Why even make prints ?

Having quality prints made is no minor task. It took us, the photographer and I, months of adjusting our protocol before we could produce the beautiful prints I can now offer.

Digitization, printing and framing those pieces also have a considerable cost in both time and money.

Furthermore, it can be tricky for the viewers to distinguish originals from prints which in a way can de-valuate the perceived quality of my original, handmade paintings.

That being said, those limited edition prints have a considerable advantage : their selling price is much more affordable than the price of the original artworks.

Indeed, my original watercolours being the fruits of tenths of hours of work, their price naturally reaches hundreds of euros for most of them.

Yet, it bugged me a little, or a lot actually, that I was exclusively producing pieces that I couldn't afford myself.

I know too well what it's like to have little financial means and I believe that shouldn't prevent anyone to access art and culture.

It's important to me that I am able to share my work with the greater number of nature lovers, without their wallet being a criteria.

I hope I was clear enough in my explanations. Don't hesitate to write if you happen to have any question !
